CPUC Mobile Broadband Field Testing Report, Spring 2012

The California Public Utilities Commission has a project to measure actual mobile broadband connection quality throughout the state. This paper is a report from the first field tests measuring performance delivered by the four major cellular carriers at 1200 locations. Data gathered through this testing process is used to identify areas that are without broadband service. This testing also provides a snapshot of the current state of the roll out of LTE by the carriers. Ken Biba is a coauthor of the paper, which can be downloaded here:

2010: Guidelines for Successful Large Scale Outdoor Wi-Fi Networks

Novarum has tested many large scale wireless broadband networks over the past several years. Everything is changing rapidly - the demands on these networks and the technology behind them. This paper summarizes what we've discovered about wireless broadband networks - Wi-Fi, WiMAX and cellular - and concludes with recommendations for the design of modern, high performing Wi-Fi networks that deliver useful service to users. The Value of Smart Antennas: Campus Mesh Network Performance Benchmark

Novarum tested three mesh networking systems in a real world setting to compare their performance, coverage predictability, and overall deployment cost. Smart antennas and 802.11n technology provide significant performance benefits in these tests. Download the full paper here:

Enterprise Wireless LANs

802.11ac Enterprise Wireless LAN Testing

Novarum tested 802.11ac systems from Aruba and Cisco in an office setting. These are high density tests with up to seventy five 802.11ac clients. We compare the Aruba and Cisco systems with different traffic loads, and illustrate the effects of Aruba's ClientMatch software in action. Download the test report here:

Three Stream Enterprise 802.11n Access Point Testing

Novarum tested three stream, dual band 802.11n Access Points in an office setting. This is a single AP rate and range test. It shows the benefits of system level design that increases the effective coverage at 5 GHz. Download the full paper here:

Enterprise 802.11n Wireless LAN Access Point Benchmark

Novarum tested three leading enterprise wireless LAN systems to compare their performance with 802.11n APs. There are significant performance differences even with a single AP. Download the full paper here:

Challenges and opportunities of IEEE 802.11n

This is a white paper that we wrote in 2007 about 802.11n. 802.11n is an amazing step forward for the wireless LAN industry. There are many exciting advances in the standard and it has already been very successful in many markets. There are some challenges when rolling out 802.11n in the enterprise. Distributed Antenna System Enterprise Wireless LAN

Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) provide indoor coverage for a variety of wireless technologies including 802.11 Wireless LANs. In this paper we compare the performance of a Cisco Wireless LAN System with and without the DAS in a real world environment. Download the full paper here:

Enterprise WLAN Scale Testing

Novarum tested three leading enterprise wireless LAN systems in an office environment. The results are surprising. Some of the high traffic tests reveal the limitations of the 802.11 MAC protocol when deployed with multiple APs in an office environment. Download the full paper here:

Novarum Wireless Broadband Review

The Novarum Wireless Broadband Review was a study of wireless broadband services that analyzed the performance and service availability of networks based on Wi-Fi, 3G Cellular, and WiMAX. Novarum tested these networks under comparable conditions, from a user perspective, with standard client devices and commercially proven tools and methodology.

Over fifty wireless broadband services were tested as part of the Novarum Wireless Broadband Review. Testing reports are available for individual city networks including Mountain View, Portland, Philadelphia, Anaheim, Longmont, St. Cloud and many more.
